Carisoprodol (commonly known by the brand name Soma) is a prescription-only medication used as a muscle relaxant.
It is typically prescribed to treat acute (short-term), painful musculoskeletal conditions—such as severe muscle spasms, strains, or injuries—and is designed to be used alongside rest, physical therapy, and other pain-management treatments.
How It Works
Unlike medications that target the muscles directly, Carisoprodol works by acting on the central nervous system (CNS).
It blocks pain sensations between the nerves and the brain.
When ingested, your liver metabolizes Carisoprodol into meprobamate. Meprobamate is an older sedative-hypnotic drug (an anti-anxiety medication) that exerts a strong calming and tranquilizing effect on the brain, which contributes to its muscle-relaxing and sedative properties.

Acute Muscle Pain: Relief of discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions.
Short-Term Therapy: Because of its potential for habit-formation, it is strictly intended for short-term use (typically up to 2 to 3 weeks), as there is little evidence of its effectiveness for longer-term therapy.
Key Risks & Regulatory Status
Because it metabolizes into meprobamate, Carisoprodol carries a significant risk of abuse, misuse, physical dependence, and addiction. Consequently, it is classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance in the United States and is highly restricted or entirely banned in several other countries.
Sedation and Impairment: It can cause significant drowsiness, dizziness, and motor impairment. Combining it with alcohol, other sedatives, or opioid medications can lead to dangerous levels of respiratory depression (slowed breathing) or overdose.
Withdrawal Symptoms: Stopping the medication abruptly after prolonged or heavy use can lead to withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, insomnia, tremors, and in severe cases, hallucinations or seizures.
Common Side Effects: These include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and an increased heart rate.
